In writing, the road to irrelevance is trying to write like a writer you admire.
For example, I like the writing of Eric Hoffer.
But if I were to try imitating Hoffer’s style, my writing would become inauthentic and devoid of energy.
Because good writing has the energy of truth behind it.
Truth reflecting the writer’s particular background, personal beliefs, and professional experience.
Imitation is really a reflection of a desire to be accepted.
I found an aphorism which indirectly comments on the point I’m trying to make:
Acceptance
Under the terms of others
Is worse
Than rejection
Under your own terms
