Creative Process: Artistic Vision, Authenticity

“Art is fundamentally communication,” Ian Roberts wrote in his book Creative Authenticity (1)

“We feel something, and we want to give expression to it.

“We may find someone that responds. We may not.”

How can we communicate our artistic vision?

Roberts suggests that to effectively “get across” our core idea, we must eliminate anything unconnected with our concept.

Our idea must be “isolated and honed.”

Be ruthless.

Compress the critical components of your artistic vision.

“Everything superfluous and tangential needs to be eliminated. Otherwise, the idea may get buried, and our intention deflected,” Roberts advises

My main takeaways from Roberts’ advice:

“The problem is seldom that an idea is too simple.”

“Power comes from something deeply felt and simply stated.”
