Poem: Irritation; a visual and auditory recollection

Irritation

It’s dark outside
and really quiet
– except
for an empty Styrofoam cup
that’s blowing and rattling
non-stop around
my apartment’s
peeling-paint steel balcony

And, because it’s 3:00
in the morning, and
cold outside,
I’m not going out there
to stop it

So I put the pillow
over my head
and try to go back to sleep
– unsuccessfully

Whatever merits this “poem” may or may not have as a creative writing experiment, it is based on a few lines I wrote years ago, and kept in my “writing ideas” folder. It’s  a simple effort to write down in a structured format a recollection of a visual and auditory image.

My career has been focussed on writing and editing fact-based data, so writing imaginative material is a hobby I pursue sporadically – for fun and as a frustrating way to “relax.”
